Is it really that time again already? I’m talking ’bout PLAYOFFS!
Wednesday was the first game of the first round against the LA Kings and without a doubt I had to my nails to show my support. It was a last minute realization on the Tuesday evening so I quickly Googled “Canucks nails” and I found this image as inspiration (click here).
I quickly gathered my polish supplies, which consisted of Sally Hansens’ Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in Blue It and Insta-Dri Whirlwind White. Luckily I also have my Sephora OPI nail design pens in a green and a white because they really helped with the details. And as for polishing tools all I used was a dotter and a very small brush.
And here you go, the final results! I was thinking of putting Luongo and Keser’s numbers on my thumbs because they’re my favorite, but 33 and 22 looked way better and the Sedins are the core of the Canucks so it’s only fair that I pay tribute to these awesome Swedes.
It took a lot of focus and patience to complete this mani and I have to say thanks to my boyfriend for excusing my turrets-like f-bombs when I messed up (which was a lot!) and putting up with the strong polish odour.
I leave you all with this: THE SHUFFLENUCK.
(You can see more of this amazingness here.)
I’m a total bandwagon jumper, I’ll be the first to admit it :) I honestly didn’t even know who made it into this Superbowl until a few days ago. My bf, on the other hand, is a hardcore football fan so I dedicate this mani to him.
On Friday I asked my football-loving-Facebook friends if I should go for the Patriots or Giants and the majority voted for the Giants. Thank goodness because I did my homework and the Patriots logo is much more complicated.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
NEW YORK GIANTS
I woke up this morning and realized that I only had a few hours to get my nails done or I’d miss all the hype. AND GET THIS: I didn’t own a single bottle of blue nail polish! I quickly jumped into my car, went to Shoppers Drug Mart and found me a bottle of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Blue It, which is the perfect blue to match the Giants logo. AND it was only $3.00, bonus! For the red I used my favorite China Glaze China Rouge and my white is a Sephora by OPI nail design pen.
It took me a while to decide on the design I wanted to create today. I didn’t want to do anything complicated because I had a lunch date at 1pm, which only have me 2 hours to do my nails (including drying time!). I started off with the blue base, added the white tip, painted the red line, then drew the NY logo with my pen on my ring finger. It looked great, but I didn’t have the time to do NY on every nail so I used my dotter tool and painted three dots on the rest of the nails. BOOM, Superbowl mani done in 45 minutes :)
Who are you cheering for and what is your favorite Superbowl snack?
One of the more popular nail trends I noticed over the past holidays was the gradient mani. I tried to do it once with just the bottle brushes and two different shades of pink, but it did not work out at all. Like, at all.
I eventually found a really good tutorial, which is actually from 2 years ago (wow, am I late or what) and it shows you how to do a gradient mani using the sponge technique. I dug up some old makeup sponges and seized the opportunity to use my newly purchased American Apparel Metallic Bronze Dash with Color Club Boho Mojo and added dash of glitter with Sephora by OPI Flurry Up!.
Originally I didn’t want to use a glitter, but my sponging wasn’t so great and it left a bumpy texture so I figured adding the glitter would hide the ugliness. I’m really glad I went for it because the larger pieces of glitter made the whole mani pop and the Bronze Dash with the Boho Mojo made the nails look very ethereal, almost universe-like and the glitter resemble the planets. Now I’m just getting too deep about this mani.
In natural light, the Bronze Dash didn’t pick up as much as I had hoped for even though I sponged on a good amount at the tip of the nails to make them more intense, but the photograph and Instagram-ation of the mani made them look really awesome. I received a lot of comments and can’t wait to try out the technique again when my nails are longer and with other color schemes.
What are some nail trends that you think are coming back from back in the day?
Besides chips, nail polish, and the usual girly stuff, I also have a huge attraction to “reality tv” (what isn’t reality tv anymore?) and finally having a PVR machine really helps me keep up to date with all drama. My friend, Miss K, and I have started following The Bachelor series and because we both missed the first introduction episode we did a back to back viewing date and she asked me to do her nails.
I saw photos of cherry nails a while back thought that they were the cutest thing and it seemed simple enough for me to practice on someone else’s hand so that’s we did for Miss K. The dotting tool was super handy and I used China Glaze China Rouge, Sephora by OPI Dark Room, and of course, Sally Hansen Whirlwind White. The Whirlwind White is such a good and thick opaque white and it’s so inexpensive!
When we saw the final results, we were both so excited and couldn’t contain our “omg that is soooo cute” remarks haha.
So which Bachelor girl do you think will win? Both Miss K and I like Kacie B. Ben and her look so natural together and she’s got such a cute souther charm about her. Can’t wait for the next week’s episode… mysterious girl!
Sometimes all a girl needs is some glitter and everything seems to get way brighter and better.
I was visiting a girlfriend in LA and picked up a bottle of L.A. Girl Glitter Addict in Inspire and I couldn’t wait to try it out when I got home. By the way, don’t you just love good inexpensive polish? This bottle only cost me $3.50!
I used Sephora by OPI in Dark Room as the base, then laid on two thick layers of Inspire on top, but it still didn’t feel blingy enough so I added a pop of silver with Sephora by OPI Flurry Up!. When I finished, I kept staring at how shiny my fingers were, then I thought “shit, how am I going to remove all this glitter?”. I’m writing this post a week later so I can tell you that it took me about an entire episode of Friends to take these off my and my fingers were so dry from the remover the next day. Vaseline to the rescue.
**UPDATE** I can’t believe I didn’t think of this before! Several months later, I’m reading a post from Oooh, Shinies! and she shared the perfect tip to remove glitter polish, click here if you want to save some major time!
